PRINCIPAL DR. HAYGOOD

Dr. Calvin L. Haygood Jr. was born on January 10, 1980 to the proud parents of Bishop Avis D. Haygood and the late Calvin B. Thomas Sr. 

Dr. Haygood hails from the Palmetto State of South Carolina. A Charleston, South Carolina native, he began his high school career. Highly involved in many extracurricular activities such as Marching Bands, School Concert Bands, Gospel, and Show Choirs. He also held a position on the SGA board as secretary. Upon finishing his high school career at Darlington High School, he graduated with honors and received several high award scholarships.

Dr. Haygood enrolled into Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts in English education. Masters of Art in Social Work from Ashwood University, Sarasota Fl. Education Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership and Christian Education, from Harvest Time International University, Tallahassee Florida. Dr. Haygood, was the first African American male to complete the Inaugural Hybrid Ph.D program in Clinical Psychology from the University of South Carolina, in Columbia South Carolina. An avid learner he is, in 2017 he attended Isiah University Seminary, and received a Th.D in Theology.

As an educator of 20 years, Dr. Haygood began his teaching career in Columbia, South Carolina at Eau Claire High School, the Mighty Shamrocks, were he was the English four teacher. He dedicated his first five years of teaching to Richland One School District, Columbia, South Carolina. Dr. Haygood became a role model for the students that he had. After graduating his first senior class, and fulfilling all his roles and responsibilities, Dr. Haygood accepted a position at Columbia High School, where he held several positions. Dr. Haygood has a love for children with special needs and autism. As an LD self contained teacher, Dr. Haygood was able to teach at-risk youth in one class room all day. While making full proof of his career, he was able to turn at-risk youth around, maintain employment for graduating seniors, and increased test scores by 60 percent. He served as the assistant band director and color guard instructor. Leading the marching capitals to a lower state victory, with a superior rating for three consecutive years, and held the number two spot for best guardline in the state of South Carolina for three consecutive years. During his tenure at Richland One School District, Dr. Haygood demonstrated steadfast leadership that resulted in high expectations, increased students achievement and character.

Dr. Haygood, relocated to Jacksonville, Florida in 2015, where he served as lead teacher for the 4th and 5th grade, co-chair of the English department for 9-12th grade, senior

class advisor, as well as a mentor teacher for struggling teachers, at Joshua Christian Academy Jacksonville, Florida. 

​

Currently, Dr. Calvin L. Haygood Jr., serves Icon Preparatory School Jacksonville, Florida as the English Language Arts (ELA) teacher for the 4th and 5th grade upper school, as well as lead teacher. Dr. Haygood has a profound love for children of every race and culture. He goes above and beyond for his students to ensure each of their success. 

Dr. Haygood, is a proud and active member of the Kappa Phi Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., where he holds the office of chaplain. Dr. Haygood, routinely facilitates workshops and community service projects to influence, empower, shape and mold future leaders for tomorrow.

Dr. Calvin La’von Haygood Jr., will serve as the Founding Principal at Icon Preparatory School Cleveland, Ohio; where he will empower each individual student and teacher to experience growth to their highest potential.
